The little shoots : What are we sowing in July?

Are you new to gardening and you never know when to plant your fruits and vegetables? Or how to proceed? At Youdoit, we are here to help you do all your manual work simply and give you tips!

Vegetables, herbs, flowers… Here are all the recommended plantings for July!

You can also plant:

  • Carrots, leeks, turnips to be sown in line (always sowing every two weeks for a regular harvest)
  • Lettuce
  • Turnips
  • Biennials (a biennial plant is a plant that completes its life cycle in two years) such as digitalis, pansies, forget-me-nots, and poppies which will be transplanted in September
  • Pumpkins for Halloween
  • Chillies and peppers
  • Chinese cabbage
  • Spinach, curly chicory, escaroles, wild chicory to sow online
  • Sorrel, chervil, chervis, angelica, coriander, mountain ache to sow in a shaded place for chervil and to water abundantly

Our advices :

  • Boost your plants by watering them every two weeks with diluted nettle, comfrey or horsetail manure.
  • Hoe regularly between crops and water abundantly but at intervals.
  • During very hot days, lack of rain, or even a heat wave, prefer to water in the evening to make the most of the irrigation water. The soil will be better rehydrated than during watering in the middle of the day, with the risk of burning the leaves.

Plant diseases in July:

Even if the attacks are less because the heat and the drought do not help their development, are still to be feared:

  • Colorado beetles (parasitic insects) on potatoes and eggplants

To keep them away:

  • Make a repellent by combining basil, nasturtium, flax, nettle, horseradish and dill

  • Make a treatment with copper sulphate (Bordeaux mixture)

To get rid of it:

  • Every other day, collect the adult Colorado beetles.

  • To kill them quickly, you can simply drown them in a bucket of water.

  • Also crush the larvae by rubbing them vigorously against the leaves. The eggs are yellow in color, usually lodged on the back of the leaves.

  • Powdery mildew (microscopic mold) on zucchini and cucumber

To get rid of it:

  • Remove the parts affected by powdery mildew, burn them and spray horsetail manure or an infusion of garlic added to milk on the leaves and stems of the attacked plant.

  • Mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda for 1 liter of water. As a wetting agent, add 3 teaspoons of olive oil. Spray once a week on affected parts of plants.

  • The caterpillars of the cabbageworm and the moth on cabbage

To overcome it:

  • Spray a solution based on Bacillus thuringiensis

  • Downy mildew (disease caused by tiny fungi) on potatoes and tomatoes

To overcome it:

  • Spray Bordeaux mixture at the beginning of the month
